Sharing knowledge on World Hand Hygiene Day

Have you heard about World Hand Hygiene Day?

If you haven’t yet, you may be thinking that sounds like yet another commemoration day where a few pictures are shared, everyone gives a thumbs up, and it’s forgotten by the following day. World Hand Hygiene Day is definitely not one of those days.

Celebrated annually on the 5th of May, this global advocacy day focuses on something simple, yet extremely powerful, hand hygiene. The theme of Hand Hygiene Day 2024 is “Power of Hand Hygiene“, highlighting the significance of hand hygiene practice on prevention and control of illnesses.

You may be wondering how something as simple as handwashing can save lives. Well, soap is still the number one weapon in the fight against transmissible diseases such as diarrhoea and lower-respiratory-tract infections.

These diseases cause 3.5 million deaths among children under the age of five each year and they are preventable.  No matter what the disease, its spread can be halted if people cultivate the habit of regular hand washing.

Initial – Passionate advocates of World Hand Hygiene Day

Moreover, washing your hands with soap and water is the world’s cheapest, yet most effective do-it-yourself vaccine against common illnesses such as flu and diarrhoea.

At Initial, we are passionate advocates of World Hand Hygiene Day.  Teaching children the importance of good hand hygiene is not JUST teaching them how to wash their hands properly. It’s equipping them with the knowledge to actually save a life.

You might think it’s a chore but washing your hands properly only takes 30 seconds. What else can you do in 30 seconds?

Remember hand drying and sanitising

Drying your hands properly is almost as important for good hygiene as washing them properly.

Wet hands have a far higher number of microorganisms on the skin than dry hands – and are more effective at transferring them to touched surfaces. Hand sanitisers are perfect for when there’s no water or soap available. Higher risk environments like hospitals, malls or schools will benefit greatly from hand sanitisers.
