While the staff are away the germs will play

Workplace Hygiene

The festive season is fast approaching and I know that many people, myself included, are already thinking about our plans to kick back and relax away from work. But have you stopped to wonder about what happens in your office or on your desk while you are away? The last thing you need while reclining on the beach somewhere is to be worrying about whether you remembered to clean out the food in your office drawers.

Nothing could be worse than returning to the office after a break to find that the office smells of sour milk and there are cockroaches scurrying around

I’ve taken the liberty of compiling a checklist which will help you come back to an office that is almost as good as you left it:

Throw away Perishables

The first thing you should do is to throw away all perishables: ensure that the secret food drawer is clear and if your office has a refrigerator make sure that you have cleaned out all your food items.

Techno Hygiene

The holiday period would be a good time for your office manager to schedule a techno hygiene service. When you consider how many surfaces we touch every day, every hour, every minute whilst doing our job - be it your desktop computer or the office printer - you can imagine the amount of cross-contamination that occurs.

Furthermore leaving those surfaces as is when you go on your holiday allows them to become a breeding ground for germs and bacteria. Initial’s Techno Hygiene treatment will ensure that your office equipment is cleaned, sanitised and restored to optimal occupational hygiene standards, meaning that you will return to an environment that looks just about brand new.

Declutter your Office

It’s always such a pleasure to return to an environment that’s organised and neat. The benefit of decluttering is that not only does it makes your desk/office quicker and easier to clean but, more importantly, helps reduce the chances of pests such as cockroaches and rats invading. And a pest problem can be more detrimental to your health than just the fright you get when they run across your desk!

Pest Control

In addition to decluttering, you might want to convince your office to invest in preventative pest control services. Lengthy time away will indeed open up your office to pests. Rodents and cockroaches will surely want to use your offices as their own holiday destination.

Have a checklist of all the equipment that needs to be turned off

If you’re going to be away for a while, make a list of all the things that need to be turned off, for example, your desktop computer, printers etc. I advise you to unplug some of them for safety reasons, as circuit boards, overheated cords and lithium ion batteries found in electronics can fail and cause fires.

Prepare for a rainy day

I’d recommend investing in high quality floor mats and placing them in entrance ways. Make sure that are highly durable and absorbent, as this will help during periods of heavy rain while you’re away.

Holidays are a time to relax and properly enjoy yourself with your family and friends. The last thing you need is the worry that the little things that may have been easily overlooked at the office are going to dampen your festivities. Hopefully, these top tips will give you the freedom to have peace of mind during the holiday break.
