5 unexpected places you’ll find Initial services (and why)

Workplace Hygiene

If you are a regular reader of our blog, you’ll know by know that here at Initial we view basic hygiene services as indispensable to any type of business. However, many people still think of Initial as providing hygiene services mainly to office bathrooms.

We thought we’d challenge this perception by telling you about some of the locations we service that fall outside of your usual office bathroom scenario; proof that good hygiene  is everyone’s responsibility.

So here - in no particular order - are 5 Initial customers that don’t fall into the “typical office” category:

  • Banking halls:  Hand sanitising stations
Paper money is - unsurprisingly - pretty high on the list of things we handle on a daily basis that are potentially germ-ridden. An article published on Scientific America made the case that the “fibrous” surface of paper money gave bacteria ample place to hide and multiply. And the longer money stays in circulation, the more opportunity it has to become contaminated. The article went on to state that “antibiotic-resistant bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which can cause life-threatening blood infections, can survive on our currency.”

So spare a thought for the bank teller who has to handle hundreds of notes on a daily basis. Their chances of  picking up something nasty from a contaminated R50 note are pretty high, which is why Initial provide hand sanitiser dispensers at their cubicles.
  • Pollsmoor Maximum Security Prison: Feminine Hygiene Units and Waste disposal
Since it was established in 1964, Pollsmoor prison in Cape Town has been systematically expanded, so that today it comprises five prisons. The Female Prison houses juvenile and adult women, both awaiting-trial and sentenced. The prison has a staff of 1,278 and the capacity to accommodate 4,336 offenders, but the current inmate population is over 7,000, according to their Facebook page.

Initial provides Feminine Hygiene units to the female prison and to the staff buildings.  In a confined space with a high population - such as a prison - one doesn’t have to work very hard to imagine how quickly illnesses could spread via contaminated hands. Feminine hygiene units from Initial ensure that female inmates and staff have a safe and hygienic means of disposing of their feminine hygiene products.
  • Old-age homes and pre-school’s: Nappy disposal services
Adult incontinence - especially amongst the aging population - is one of those things that very seldom gets discussed, but which has huge hygiene implications. Initial provides a number of old ages homes and residences with nappy disposal services. We also provide nappy disposal services for creches and preschools. All nappy waste is disposed of in line with governmental waste regulations, and nappy units are lockable and operated by foot pedal so as to further limit the risk of cross contamination.
  • The Platinum Mines in Rustenburg:  Deep Cleaning Treatments
Mining is an extremely labour intensive operation, and the sheer volume of people raise all sorts of hygiene issues.  One of these is the state of bathrooms - especially the shower facilities - in the hostels on the mines.

Initial provides Deep Cleaning Services to these facilities on a regular basis to ensure that shower drains and sinks do not become clogged with a combination of body fat and soap scum, and that tiles are regularly deep cleaned to prevent the buildup of grime.  Professional deep cleaning from Initial supplements the daily cleaning done by cleaning staff who are not able to tackle scale buildup and body fat with domestic cleaning products. A healthy workforce is a productive workforce, and in an environment as challenging as mining, no one can afford for staff to be off sick.
  • Cape Town’s Premier Gentleman’s Club: Bathroom hygiene services
Initial provides bathroom hygiene services - including soap, sanitisers and air fresheners - to a well known gentleman's club in Cape Town.  In 2017, Initial undertook a survey of 5000 people who use public bathrooms. The research aimed to understand the perception of smell in public bathrooms and its impact on behaviours, brand loyalty and willingness to return. The study showed that when encountering unpleasant smells in a bathroom, 88% of people will leave immediately, 46% will never return, and 77% say their perception of the business is negatively affected. Nearly 70% of people will assume that a pleasant smelling washroom is clean.

A pleasant bathroom experience therefore plays a huge role in how long a customer will stay on your premises, and research has shown that the longer a customer stays, the higher their spend. Whether you are a 5 star restaurant, a bar or a nightclub, a positive customer experience is key to getting customers to return.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter what industry sector your business falls into, the underlying message is the same: good hygiene is essential to keep both your employees healthy and productive, and your customers or visitors happy.  And Initial has the expertise to provide hygiene services that meet any unique requirement your environment may have.
