Roundup: our 7 most popular blog posts of 2020

Written by Nathalie Leblond

We've written a lot of blog content this year.  In fact, 2020 has seen us create more content than  ever before, and we hope that you - our readers - have found it helpful, insightful and thought provoking. Here are your favourites posts of 2020.

It probably comes as absolutely NO surprise that when I look over the articles the team and I have written this year, the majority of them  are either directly or indirectly related to COVID-19 and the hygiene measures we can take to try and prevent the spread of this disease.

And when I looked at our statistics and reporting for the year to see which of our blogs were the most popular, it follows that most of the favourites were also related to the global pandemic.  However, there was one blog in the top 7 which has very little to do with COVID-19, but which does have to do with a core service our Initial's - sanitary waste

So without further ado, here are the 7 most popular blogs we posted in 2020.

Your 7 favourite hygiene blog posts of 2020, in no particular order:

  1. Gloves on, or gloves off?

Originally written under the title: Food safety: gloves on or gloves off? the original article was published in October 2018, and then updated in March 2020. The first piece was about the use of nitrile or latex gloves in the food industry as a way of preventing food-borne illnesses, whilst the follow-up piece focused more on whether the use of gloves by the general public can limit cross-contamination and one’s risk of contracting COVID-19. Both versions have proved extremely popular.

  2. What does the Coronavirus outbreak mean for you?

This blog post was published in early February, at a time when information about the pandemic was still limited in South Africa, and which may account for some of it's popularity. Drawing on information and expertise from our businesses abroad, Initial were able to provide clear, factual and useful guidance and the emerging pandemic.

  3. Is your Fingerprint Scanner making you sick?

Originally written in February 2020, and then updated in November 2020 in light of new COVID-19 guidance, this article looks at the risks of cross-contamination in a shared workspace - and more specifically to a possible culprit: the fingerprint scanner.

  4. Ask the Expert: a day in the life of a GP during COVID-19

A personal favourite because the GP is question is a very dear friend of mine, but also a reader favourite! As the 7th of April was World Health Day, this post was written in honour of all our health workers -  in every possible field - and our Ask the Expert column featured a chat with a local GP about her experiences working in a suburban Cape Town practice during the COVID-19 pandemic

  5. 10 things you absolutely need to know about wearing a mask

Written at the end of April when mask-wearing had just become a mandatory part of moving to level 4 lockdown ( remember those days - eleventy seven months ago?) I tackled the questions that my friends and family - and our readers - were asking most often about masks and their efficacy, use and care.

  6. What is deep cleaning, and why is it important?

This one snuck in under the radar somewhat, but has proved to be very popular over the last few months. This post looks at the important differences between deep cleaning and daily cleaning, and how these two different hygiene solutions complement each other.

  7. What does our legislation say about sanitary waste?

Our final blog post in our most popular posts of 2020 is an article that I have rewritten at least 3 times, as legislation has changed, or our understanding of the legislation has changed. Needless to say it's a fairly dense read (given that the topic is legislation) but our readers have ploughed through it time and time again, and keep returning to this particular article. And that makes me so glad, because it means that we are succeeding in our goal of educating our readers on safe and hygienic sanitary waste solutions. Because this is such an important topic, we also created an in-depth guide to safe sanitary waste disposal.

I joined Rentokil Initial South Africa in 2004 as the PA to the MD, and after 6 months maternity leave I re-joined the Company in 2009 as the Marketing Co-ordinator for Rentokil. I'm now the Marketing Communication Manager for Rentokil Initial. I'm still terrified of cockroaches (Americana's only!) but the rest of the creepy crawlies we deal with don't really bug me (see what I did there?), so I guess I'm in the right industry! I am passionate about what we do here at Rentokil Initial and also write for our Hygiene Blog, which can be found at www.initial.co.za. Life outside of Rentokil mostly revolves around my daughter, who has just turned eleven, and my husband (who is a bit older). I love living in Cape Town and wouldn't trade living here for anywhere else in the world.
