The holiday season is fast approaching and I know most of us are already thinking about our holiday plans and what we hope to get up to as the curtain closes on another hard year at work. In the midst of all of that, it might be easy to forget about cleaning the office before we shut down, but the last thing you would want is to come back in January to an environment that smells of dread and decay.
Here’s my list of things to do and clean before you go o leave to help put your mind at ease once you’re on holiday:
Book a deep cleaning treatment for your bathroom:
Did you know that the flushing rims, fittings, and surrounding areas of each of your toilet cubicles - as well as other bathroom amenities - are exposed to continuous deposits of faecal matter and other harmful bacteria that daily cleaning can’t effectively treat? This bacteria builds up throughout the year and eventually requires an expert deep cleaning treatment
Now would be a good time to book a deep cleaning treatment to take care of that so you can truly have a “fresh” start once you return to work.
Clean your office equipment:
It’s easy to forget during the year (as you’re chasing deadlines) that the multitude of surfaces we touch every minute, every hour, every day whilst doing our job, are potentially harbouring germs that could make us sick.
Grime, dust, stains (like tea and coffee), food particles, skin cells, saliva and other debris from office equipment such as telephones, switchboards, keyboards, monitors, CPU’s, photocopiers, fax machines and shredders are easily forgotten.
I recommend regularly cleaning and sanitising your office equipment, but in case you’ve been a bit lax over the course of the year, you could book a techno-hygiene treatment and have it professionally done. This treatment is carried out by hygiene technicians who will clean those hard to reach places without damaging the equipment
Don’t forget to clean out your cupboard/desk:
Don’t forget to clean out your desk and ensure that any perishable goods are thrown out: the last thing you need is to come back to a mouldy drawer in January, and the possibility of a pest invasion.
Clean office rugs/mats:
Your daily cleaners may clean the carpets regularly throughout the year, but more often than not they don’t take the time to clean underneath feature rugs, nor do they wash the rugs thoroughly. It might be worth taking a look for yourself to ensure they are clean. Alternatively, you could get mats from Initial hygiene which are regularly cleaned and replaced.
Clean light fixtures:
The inside of hanging fixtures and floor or desk lamps often harbour a lot of dust that goes unnoticed, and as such we tend to forget to clean those areas. You might want to give them a good wipe with a damp cloth and perhaps even sanitise them before going on leave.
Take a look at your air conditioner:
Air conditioners naturally attract a lot of the dust that is floating in the air of your office, however, we rarely have time to clean them during the year. This means that eventually the air quality in your office is compromised. Now would be a good time to give that air conditioner a little attention and remove the layer of dust on it.
In a way, your office can be seen as an extension of yourself, so as you are preparing to take a vacation and release the year’s exhaustion, help your office prepare for its rest too so that you and your office can start the year fresh once the festivities are over.
