[UPDATE] How to wash your hands - learn from the experts

Written by Lemay Rogers

Have you heard about Global Handwashing Day?

If you haven’t yet, you may be thinking that sounds like another silly commemoration day where a few pictures are shared, everyone has a laugh and it’s forgotten by the following day.  Global Handwashing Day is definitely not one of those days.

Celebrated annually today - the 15th of October - this global advocacy day focusses on a simple activity, hand washing, that can prevent diseases and save lives in an affordable way.  The 2018 theme for GHD is “Clean hands - a recipe for good health”.

You may be wondering how something as simple as handwashing can save lives, but soap is still the number one weapon in the fight against transmissible diseases such as diarrhoea and lower-respiratory-tract infections. These diseases cause 3.5 million deaths among children under the age of five each year and they are preventable.  No matter what the disease, its spread can be halted if people –especially young children - cultivate the habit of regular hand washing.  Washing your hands with soap and water is the world’s cheapest, yet most effective do-it-yourself vaccine against common illnesses such as flu and diarrhoea.

At Initial, we are passionate advocates of Global Handwashing Day.  Teaching children the importance of good hand hygiene is not JUST teaching them how to wash their hands properly, it’s equipping them with the knowledge to actually save a life.

Washing your hands isn’t difficult, but it is about employing the right technique to ensure that you do it correctly. It’s so easy we asked Our Future; 4 year old children from Opti-Baby & Kids  Fourways to demonstrate how easy it is to wash your hands correctly.

They did an amazing job!

You might think it’s a chore but washing your hands properly only takes 30 seconds. What else can you do in 30 seconds?
