Celebrating 10 years of hand washing

Written by Lemay Rogers
Cleanliness and Hygiene

On the 15th of October 2018, we celebrated Global Handwashing Day for the tenth time since inception in 2008.  Founded by the Global Handwashing Partnership, communities across the world got together to share hand washing best practice under the theme  “Clean hands – a recipe for health.”

If you’ve been a subscriber to our blog for a while, you will know that at Initial we are passionate about hand hygiene and that we have written about the subject at length. There are, however, a lot of other organisations that produced fantastic material to celebrate Global Handwashing Day, and I wanted to share some of my personal favourites.

1. Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) mobilising communities

It’s always a pleasure to see our South African Government mobilise to assist and educate communities.  The Department of Water and Sanitation is running their Sanitation Campaign from 01 October-30 November 2018 to include Global Handwashing Day and World Toilet Day (commemorated on 19 November).

2. Initial’s family handwashing habits study

Clean hands a recipe for good health

Initial conducted research to study the handwashing habits of 14 families across Malaysia, France, the UK, South Africa, and Spain. The families’ hands were swab tested twice a day, before breakfast and dinner.  The results were insightful and highlighted the importance of washing your hands, especially before mealtimes. Got to the article to learn more about Initial’s findings.

3. Lifebuoy’s Hi 5 Campaign

Catchy and fun, I loved Lifebuoy’s video to raise awareness around handwashing.

4. USAID awareness article featured on Medium

Claire Hubert’s awareness piece about the great work USAID is doing around the world is inspiring.  From Kenya to Bangladesh and Afghanistan, the message around the power of good hand hygiene habits is being received globally!

5. Essity’s video showcasing the importance of handwashing

Essity has a fantastic video on their Global Handwashing Day page showcasing how many things an average person touches in a day.  Take a look… it’s very illuminating!Handwashing video

6. Initial’s global resource page

I might be biased but I love Initial’s global resource page around handwashing.  From infographics to studies and videos, this is a great hub from which to draw information.

I love Global Handwashing Day as is helps us to pause and appreciate the power of good hand hygiene practices (even if it is on an annual basis).  But I would like to encourage you to continue to spread the word and educate as many people as you can 365 days a year. After all, you could save a life!
